Finding a furniture restorer-conservator

First of all, please read through the following information about the accreditation of BAFRA members and the different categories of members in the association. There is a complete list of members below. As well as carrying out conservation and restoration work, some members of BAFRA will do valuations and surveys.

All full and specialist members are accredited by BAFRA. Membership of BAFRA is only open to artist-craftsmen who have been engaged in full-time restoration for a minimum of five years. Candidates for BAFRA membership are required to provide satisfactory references and are then assessed by an examiner appointed by the Executive Committee. Candidates are assessed on the levels and diversity of their skills, their knowledge of antique furniture and its history and their integrity as conservators. Their studio-workshops are assessed and they must satisfy fully the need for the highest levels of professional standards. The examiner's findings are then presented to the Executive Committee for approval.

Full Members
Are trained as cabinetmakers and are fully experienced in a wide range of skills relating to the conservation/restoration of furniture originating primarily in the British Isles. Many Full Members also have the knowledge, skills and experience needed for work on furniture from elsewhere in the world. Also many full members have additional skills and experience in more specialised aspects of furniture construction and decoration.

Specialist Full Members
Are not necessarily trained cabinetmakers, but are fully experienced in a specialised area of furniture restoration/conservation such as Carving, Japanning, Painted surface decoration, Oriental lacquer, Upholstery and Metalwork. These members are shown with an asterisk (*) and are also listed under Specialist Full Members below.

Associate Members
Are also listed. These include members in business outside the United Kingdom and full members of BAFRA who have retired or are not currently active in business as furniture restorers/conservators

A basic principle of acceptance into BAFRA membership and accreditation is that every member is entirely responsible for the full range of work entrusted to his/her care.

The Association appoints from time to time Life Member of BAFRA as recognition of the valuable services they have rendered to the Association over the years. Life Member is a member retired from active conservation and restoration but may be available for consultation. Todays Life members are:-
