BEATRIX POTTER
-
A PIONEER IN REGIONAL FURNITURE DISCOVERY

By
Dr Bernard Cotton

Our Annual Lecture in the V&A this year addresses a most unusual subject which examines the archive and collection of author Beatrix Potter's interests in and collections of country furniture.

Dr Bernard Cotton has given his research into the work of Beatrix Potter every ounce of his well known and infectious enthusiasm backed by unparalleled knowledge of the design, origins and detail of Regional Furniture for which he is so well known and with which he founded the Regional Furniture Society twenty one years ago. As many of you will know, Bill is a most gifted speaker and his lectures on both regional furniture and wood analysis are both unmissable and unforgettable.

The afternoon lecture will address Beatrix Potter's collection, memories and views of primarily country furniture, much of it bought at farm sales over a fascinating lifetime. It

is only comparatively recently and, needless to say very belatedly, that Beatrix Potter has been recognised as a truly gifted observer, recorder and commentator on a very wide range of rural matters and, in this case Regional furniture as well as architecture.
